They are numbered because that is the only way a count and a list stay in agreement. This site’s own working notes carried “every day but four” in prose above a list of five dates until somebody counted the dates, which is a small thing that would have been printed on every page of a palace website as a fact.

Note what is not on the list. No weekday closure. No conservation day. No winter shutdown. In the days between Christmas and New Year, when a good many European museums take the week off, this one opens.

Shrove Tuesday, which is the one that catches people

The three December dates and New Year’s Day surprise nobody. Shrove Tuesday does, for three reasons at once. The date follows Easter, so it lands somewhere different every year. In most of the places visitors travel here from it is an ordinary working Tuesday, so it never gets written down as a closure. And it falls in the stretch of February when a short winter break in this city is cheap and tempting.

Check the date against your flights before you book them rather than after. It is the only closure at this address that a reasonable person could walk into without having done anything wrong.

What a Monday at the Residenz is actually like

Two things follow from opening on a day that other places do not. The first is obvious and good: a Monday is a sensible day to give this palace, precisely because it is the day a short city trip usually has a hole in it.

The second is the catch this site keeps returning to. Opening on Monday does not mean opening at the same hour. The Cuvilliés Theatre is shut until 2 pm from Monday to Saturday for most of the year, and a Monday is a Monday to Saturday day. So the combination ticket bought first thing on a Monday morning has the same problem it has on any weekday: one of its three parts will not let you in for hours (which combined ticket fits which day). The exceptions are Sundays, public holidays, and the stretch from 1 August to 14 September, when the theatre opens in the morning like everything else.

A Monday morning and a Monday afternoon are different tickets

If your Monday is a morning, take the museum-and-Treasury pair ticket and leave the theatre out of it. If your Monday runs into the afternoon, take the all-three ticket and put the theatre last. Are other museums in Munich open on Mondays?

What I can tell you is that if your Monday plan is this palace, it works, every week of the year, and that the free part of the address — the Hofgarten — has no gate to be shut in the first place.

A closed day is not always a dark building

The five dates above are closures of the three ticketed parts. They are not a statement about everything that happens inside this palace, and the concert listings are the reason to say so. One of the two court chapel listings sells, in its own words, special concerts during Advent, Christmas, New Year’s Eve and Good Friday — and the December dates on the closed list sit inside that description.
